Calcium Hypochlorite 65%, 67%, 70% granular and tablet for swimming pool
Calcium hypochlorite |
Used mainly as a source of chlorine for treating water in swimming pools... It is what is commonly known as 'pool chlorine' under a variety of brand names, in powder or tablet form. It can also be the basis of a bleaching solution in cleaning agents. A chlorine compound is evolved when calcium hypochlorite is dissolved in water. This compound is an oxidising agent and kills bacteria and algae and acts as a bleaching agent.Health effectsThere have been many industrial and domestic accidents involving calcium hypochlorite. The dangers of the chemical are: It can decompose violently if contaminated with organic matter or corroded metal. Use only a clean and dry glass or ceramic cup to dispense it.It gets very hot when damp and releases chlorine gas; it may burst its container. When in contact with organic materials such as oils or solvents it can burst into flames. When in contact with acid it releases large amounts of poisonous chlorine gas.It attacks the skin causing bleaching and severe 'burns'.Inhaling it can cause lung irritation and sometimes irreversible damage.Safe handling: Never buy large quantities of the chemical.Always store separately in a cool dry place in the original container with the airtight lid closed, well away from other chemicals such as acids used in pool treatment, oils, paints, etc.Never repack calcium hypochlorite into another container. A violent reaction could occur with the container itself, or the traces of organic material left in it.Wear gloves when using products containing bleaching powder.Always open the container in subdued light.Add the calcium hypochlorite powder to the water, never the other way around and do not mix it with other pool chemicals.Never drop or roll a container of calcium hypochlorite, since it may ignite with friction. If spilled, wash off the skin or out of the eyes with plenty of water. If on clothes, IMMEDIATELY remove them and immerse in water or just jump into the pool fully clothed, otherwise clothes may ignite spontaneously.Never return sweepings to the container.Discard leftovers at the end of summer since calcium hypochlorite becomes more unstable over time. (See below.)Environmental effectsNever put leftover water-treatment or pool-test chemicals into the garbage. Although not the ideal method, the safest way to dispose of these chemicals at the moment is to dilute them in the pool where they will decompose. Never use empty containers for another chemical; wash with lots of water, puncture and place in the garbage when free of chemicals. AlternativesElectrolytic chlorination, salt water chlorination, ultraviolet and ozone disinfection systems for pools (see Pool and spa chemicals). Hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate for bleaching (see Bleaches.) |
